GS1 Release August 2025: What Does This Mean for You?
On August 23, 2025, GS1 will implement a new release in the GS1 Data Source. Suppliers are already receiving messages from GS1 and Superunie requesting that they complete their product data. This release includes important changes, such as adjustments in the validation overview and preparations for future European legislation.
What does this mean for your organization?
After a thorough review of the release contents, it has been confirmed that you do not need to provide any additional data at this time. All product data submitted to GS1 via XXtract already meets the current requirements. So, no action is required from your side.
However, this is a good opportunity to start looking ahead to upcoming changes so you’ll be well prepared when the time comes.
What is the impact of this release?
The August release includes key preparations for the upcoming EUDR regulation (EU Deforestation Regulation). This new EU law, expected to come into effect by the end of 2025, aims to combat global deforestation. It applies to products such as:
- Livestock
- Cocoa and chocolate
- Coffee
- Palm oil
- Rubber
- Soy
- Wood and derived products
Although retailers are not yet requesting this data, it's wise to start preparing now. As soon as it becomes technically possible to record EUDR data in GS1, XXtract will be ready to assist you.
Tip: Want to take the first steps toward EUDR registration? Feel free to contact us — we’re happy to help you get started!
What changes in the validation overview?
- As of August, the validation of additional dimensions for consumer units will no longer be required for the Food and Drugstore sectors. This means reduced administrative burden for products that are, for example, unfolded or assembled during use.
- Note: For the DIY, Garden, and Pet sectors, this validation will still be required.
- Additionally, GS1 is making some editorial changes to the documentation. These are purely textual and do not impact the data content.
